Rollovers on top of graphic items?

I’ve been having trouble (new to FW) getting multiple rollovers to work independently when placed on “top” of a graphic item. The graphic item assumes control as a “parent” so when I try to use actions on the individual rollovers, they all end up connected to one another because the parent now “owns” them… = one rollover, they ALL rollover.

It’s a simple as - Blue gradient menu bar graphic item to use as a background.
Put (6) transparent GIF rollovers over it - each with their own ultimate internal page link. Rollover on page link = “on” rollover image - Click=link.

I can do rollovers no issue on a blank page - even lots of them - but in this situation they all end up being forced to link to one another/all creating quite a mess. Anyone have ideas on this? I think I have to be missing something (no I didn’t RTFM) but this should be simple, yet the interface has me puzzled.

Try creating your rollover on the pasteboard, ie away from your
graphic, and then drag it into place . Also make sure Combine is
unchecked in the inspector pane for the graphic so that all the
elements stay separate. You could float the rollover on as a layer too.
Cheers

Try creating the rollover on a separate blank of a part page, or in the same position on other blank page, when completed, move/or copy paste them into position as a layer above an other background. You might have to play around with the anti-alias setting to get the desired background result.

Follow the tutorial on rollovers in the Tutorials section of the forum, step by step. Align, group, lock, rollover. Make sure each object in the rollover is individually locked. There is also a “layer” checkbox on the graphic item - make sure that’s checked too, then you should be able to drag and drop. Also do as David advised - “Try creating the rollover on a separate blank of a part page, or in the same position on other blank page,”

Hope that helps!

From your original description, I think the problem you are
experiencing is because the graphic items are combining into one
element in the published page. Rollovers work on the final graphic
items in the web page, so you need to use Freeway’s slicing feature -
select an item and uncheck the Combine Graphics box in the Inspector

  • to have things published as sets of sliced-up graphics rather than
one conglomerate. THEN apply the Rollover action.

Thanks I got it working late last night. This is what i did in frustration .I made all the rollovers somewhere else on the page , then I removed the graphic I was putting them over.I was going to leave out the graphic because I was sick of spending time on it. All of the sudden I said I am going to slide the graphic back under the text rollover graphic links I made . Then I don’t know why but it is working the way I want, all the text graphic rollovers are working independent from one another. Maybe that is the long version of slicing it up . well I will keep everyone updated on my progress thanks agin.

I think what you did was to create a self-contained group for each
rollover ‘stack’. That group object/container can be a layered item,
and if it is then it won’t merge with an underlying item… so it
won’t turn into one big combined image.

Maybe that is the long version of slicing it up .

Not really, but with the above approach it is a viable different
solution. Turning off the Combine Graphics option for different items
will make those be generated as sliced-up, disconnected sections
within the page. That way, the rollover instructions can work on just
that portion.
Your approach involved grouping a set of rollover graphics together
(I’m guessing) and then putting that floating thing over the graphic.
(Or putting the graphic under it, to be more precise.)

Okay here is the next issue I made a page up with pictures twenty pictures. Then over each picture I used a name I wanted the name to be HTML text
but when i viewd it in the safari browser it bumped up the font substantially were it does not look good. Is there a way of fixing this problem. I know a graphic text would not do this . The problem is I need this page set-up like this and I really do not have the room for text that size. Also I would like to build what I publish and not think that everything is going to change if I use HTML text. I know you can reduced the size of the text but in the document you are working on it gets a little hard to read and deal with.

Hi Brian

I am assuming that you are using Pro - Have you tried the Image Caption action?

I am not sure if it will do what you want but it is worth a try.

what is the image caption and how would you apply this . Why this whole thing started was . I am a converted PC user now with two 24" Imacs and loving every minute of the new computers, But my website was written in front page so I am building a new one to run my business from scratch . I did not build the old one but I new how to modify it and basically rebuild it along the way. Now I want a new site strictly to be modified by me on my mac . So I am kinda starting from the begining, So far it has been pretty enjoyable and I am learning allot along the way. So thanks for everyone’s Help. Freeway really seems like the right fit for me .

Hi Brian

Apologies for that - Image caption is an action written by Weaver.

It costs $10 but if it does what you want it is well worth the money.

Have a look on his site: http://www.coastalrugs.com/Actions/index.html

Hi dave thanks for the tip is allot of that stuff Free, ??? were would you find a site or what would you call when you want to make a page with a bunch of thumbnails that convert into the slave picture when you drag your mouse over it. also do they have premade script for a flash picture on the front page of a site Thanks really appreciate the info…

Brian, you can do all this within Freeway, except for creating the
Flash ‘picture’ itself, of course.

For a simple gallery of pictures, use the Rollover action on your
thumbnails and the Slave Show/Hide action on your main pictures. You
will get a result something like this:

http://www.luhrfiltergb.com/applicationsgall.html

Remember, you can easily re-size the thumbnails from your main picture
in freeway, on the fly, so all you need do is make a set of images,
from your originals, laid out in gallery form for your thumbnails and
make another set of enlarged images in a stack on top of each other
for your ‘show’ pictures. You can find a tutorial on Rollovers and
Slaves at:

http://www.softpress.com/kb/article.php?id=512

For your Flash element, draw an HTML box to the size you want and
insert the Flash file. There is a Flash Extras Action you can apply
to allow simple modifications to scaling and background colour, if
needed. You should end up with something like this:

http://www.thecakecompany.net/design.html

Or maybe a movie, like this:

Hope this helps

Make sure you define your type size using pixels. I believe this
requires Freeway Pro rather than Freeway Express.

I no I am no techy but I am getting better , How do you stack photos for a slave item. Do you have to name each photo . I made thumbnails then made a graphic box put the slave images on top of one another but could only get the last photo on top to rollover with the thumbnail. the tutorials are good but they just done dial you in on what you need to do exactly.

Colin:

could you explain this just a little bit more Thanks I really appreciate it. What I am trying top build is a website for my small independent car dealership, but I wanted some slick features not just what everyone else has.

The slave images and rollover ‘thumbnails’ have to know each other to
work. That means applying the Actions to each image and in the Action
dialogues set corresponding numbers.

  1. For your slaves, make sure that ‘Layer’ is checked in the Inspector
and apply the Slave Show/Hide Layer to each image. In the Action
    dialogue set the following parameters:

Initially: Hidden
Restore: Sticky (assuming you want the image to stay on view until
another thumbnail is “moused over”)
Slave group: leave as default (indigo)
Slave#: set a number from 1-20 with which you will match your
thumbnail rollover

Build your slave images in a stack and align them when complete using
‘Command-Y’

  1. For your thumbnails, apply the Rollover Action to each and select
the ‘Parameters’ tab in the Rollover dialogue. Then select as below

MouseOver: Items
MouseOver#: the number (1-20) that associates with the slave image you
want to trigger to show.

The rest can normally be left at default values for a simple show/hide
sequence.

That’s the basics, but if you still have trouble. I am sure Heather or
one of the more experienced Forum folk (which very much includes
Heather) will explain more lucidly than my brief outline.

Anyway, the best way to learn Freeway is to experiment - you’ll soon
be surprised what you can do that you may never get to grips with in
other web applications.
