Scrolling Layer of text & Ticker tape problem in Freeway 5

I have recently upgraded to version 5 but cannot seem to get the scrolling layer text Action to work. Is there a version for 5 and if so does it work in a different way to the earlier version?

Also I have been using the ticker tape action as well but in the version 5 it seems to be very odd trying to position it where I want it on a page. The layout version is skewed way off centre in order to acheive the ticker tape being centred in the previewed or published site.

Hi tonzo…

It is always useful if you can give us an URL for pages that you are struggling with.

We can then look at your code and see if we can find obvious problems.

When doing this please make sure that HTML Code: More Readable in File>Document Set Up>Output

Hello Dave,

The trial has been uploaded and can be viewed at:
http://www.saintfrancispipeband.com/trialversion/

as you can see immediatley there are other issues which are occuring such as the slicing through the main central image-caused by the Donation button.
The scrolling text isn’t and the Ticker tape isn’t tickering!
Also there is a rollover on the band crest which is not working. When I try to set it up then all the images on the page appear to be listed in the Rollover dialogue.
You can see how things worked on the 3.5.15 site at
http://www.saintfrancispipeband.com

Thanks for any help you can offer. I look forward to overcoming these obstacles and getting on with the rest of the build.

Hi

BTW I have just noticed you are also Glasgow based!

The first thing I note in your FW5 site is

DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC “-//W3C//DTD HTML 3.2 Final//EN”

Whereas your old one is:

3.2 doesn’t allow certain things to happen so it would be a good starter to change that.

The image that is sliced can probably be sorted by drawing another box round it and sending to back - that usually stops things from breaking apart.

Have a look at those and I will delve some more.

Hello Dave,

Thanks for that. I have changed html to 4.01 Transitional.
I have tried eradicating the slicing putting a box around the box itself and also around the button but I think I must be missing asomething. I guess this could be down to sloppiness on my part.
Let me know if you notice anything else. I’m really rarin tae go with this as I have a backlog of ideas to implement for this website.

Thanks for any help you can offer.

Still showing on the web as 3.2

Did you send the boxes to back once you drew them?

And made the HTML code: More Readable?

Just found this at SP towers

Generally speaking all Freeway 4 Actions will work in Freeway 5 as expected. The one exception to this is the Scrolling Layer Action. An updated version of this Action is now available.

I also don’t see your scroll buttons!

You might also be interested in ScrollerPro

an example at:

http://www.deltadzine.net/test/scrollerpage.html

It can be found at 404 Error Page and would mean that anybody could add ‘News’ items if they had access to the scrollerpro page on the website.

Hello Dave, thanks for this. I haven’t as yet uploaded the site with the revisions. I’ve just been previewing it in firefox.
I’ll set to work with the changes you have suggested and hopefully find a resolution.
Be in touch soon.
Cheers

Morning Dave,
No further forward with anything I fear!
I am a bit frustrated that the transfer to version 5 is not as smooth as I had hoped as it really is impeding the flow of the design process. Especially when I had the scrolling text, the rollovers, the ticker tape, the random rollover, the current date, and no slicing through images all working as I had wanted on the version 3.5 site.
I tried setting up the ticker tape on another test page and it worked fine so I am now reckoning that all the problems on this page are to do with something on the page. I am contemplating rebuilding it from scratch but want to be sure that I am not going to go through all this again only to find the same problem. If you hav any ideas as to why so many of these elements are problematic at all then it would be of great assistance.
Cheers

Dave, is it relatively easy to implement ScrollerPro into FW 5 ? I like the look of what is possible with it.

Hi Tonzod… what is your real name anyway?

The way I would approach it is to work on a blank document and gradually add/copy in the items from the old page - testing as you go along (making sure that you use the new versions of the actions).

This should show up where the incompatibility lies - if indeed there is one.

Richard - No. It is not difficult to add ScrollerPro to FW5.

It is simply a matter of adding some script as a Markup item to your FW page and installing the ScrollerPro stuff on your server. Nothing too difficult if you are used to delving into your server space with Transmit or similar.

With ScrollerPro there is a folder on the server that contains access to an Admin page which will allow you to Add/Remove ‘News’ items and images to a database without touching the FW page.

As I said before this would then allow other users, with the correct access information (username and password) to add to what is seen in the Scroller window on your page on the web.

As a note:

I am seeing an error report for JavaScript syntax in the FwRandomRollover function from your example page.

This may work itself out with your other updates. But, it should be kept in mind in case ticker tape or rollover troubles persist.

Hello Dave, Thanks for your patience. Sorry I’ve not gotten back to you but I’ve been dealing with the outside world!
My real name is Anthony ODoibhailein.
I have indeed rebuilt things and most things appear to be functioning ok apart form the scrolling text. Its been a while since I actually put together the previous v3.5 scrololing text and maybe I have forgotten how to implement it correctly. Where can I find the intructions for this again?
It did work for a bit and then when I noticed that it ceased to work. I’m going to work on things again today and tomorrow
I like the look of the scrollerpro and may well try this out.
Thanks again and thanks weaver for your comment. I need to update the loinks to the images in the random rollover and will do this once I have everything else put together.

Hi Anthony - I am sorry I would have no idea how to pronounce your second name.

I am glad things are beginning to take shape.

There is more info on the Scrolling Layer action here: http://www.softpress.com/action_files/Scroll_Layers/

Remember what I said about creating a new page if you are still having problems and copy/paste items testing as you go.

Let us know how things progress.

Hi Dave,
I have just got round to trying out Scroller Pro proper but can’t get it to work.
I have followed their instructions carefully but when I get this stage:

  1. Go to admin by pointing your browser to the “yourdomain.com
folder. The default username and password are “admin/upoint”. Specify settings and
    add news.

It comes back with the follwing error in the web browser:

“No settings files. Please reinstall script”

I have gone over the proceedure several times but still can’t get past this stage. Any help would be really appreciated if you have the time.

Thanks,
Richard

Where did you upload the scrollerpro db file to

Mine is in root at the same level as the public_html folder

Make sure that you configure the variables in admin/init.php (correct paths to various files)

If you are not sure what the FULL PATHs are for your folders, please download and test with the mini script “path.php”: http://upoint.info/cgi/helpcenter/docpublisher1000sub1000.html

Hi Dave,
Thanks for your reply. Yes I have both the scrollerpro and scrollerpro_db folders in the root. I have set all the folder permissions and I have also tried the path.php file. Yet I still get the error mentioned above - “No settings files. Please reinstall script”

I really can’t think what I’m doing wrong.

Thanks,
Richard
